Dryland log sorts and log export facilities handle millions of cubic meters of timber each year. Collecting and managing supply chain data from scaling handhelds, debarkers, and site office PCs is critical for efficient operation. A wireless network is often the only option as running ethernet cable is either impossible or cost prohibitive. However, the constant machine activity and high log piles make wireless implementation challenging.
Iotatel has designed and installed wireless networks, security cameras, and backhaul systems at six logging facilities and two remote guard stations in Coastal BC. Pre-install surveys helped determine the optimal design and also provided a benchmark for measuring project success. Innovative combinations of outdoor access points, wireless bridges, and cellular gateways have resulted in performance improvements of greater than 10X and dramatically increased wireless coverage and site security.
